Why I Waited 5 Weeks to Post This

kathryn-calhoun-how-to-get-started-online

Ugh, it’s time to get real, fellow online entrepreneurs. I have dropped the ball these last few weeks. Sorry about that. You guys are my priority, but you sure wouldn’t be able to tell from my blogging habits!

Well, I’m making it up to you by sharing my personal journey, the reasons excuses for not posting sooner. Maybe you’ve been there. If you have, I hope this helps.

Deep down (or maybe not so deep down), you and I both know how important it is to put yourself out there, even if you think you’re not ready.

Please grab a cup of coffee and give yourself the next 9 minutes to spend with me. I think you’ll be glad you did.

What did you think of the video?

I’m not asking because I’m looking for praise. I’m asking because I think (I hope!) you’re saying to yourself right now, “Hmm, that wasn’t so bad” or maybe even “That was pretty good!”

Vulnerability Time: Here are 4 mistakes I noticed in this video that almost forced me to do yet another take. See if you can relate!

  • I said I have a 3-year-old and a 5-year-old. Doh! I have a 3-year-old and a 5-MONTH-old. (Ever flubbed a word and felt like you had to start over?)
  • I forgot to mention the bonus prezzie I have for you for watching the video. (Crap – but the link is above. And below.)
  • My video expert friend told me my head should be framed on the right side of the screen. I thought I did that this time, but my iPhone tricked me and my head is actually on the left. (Ever done a bunch of do-overs because something wasn’t just so?)
  • I said I was 5 weeks late. In the text. In the video. In the blog image. Actually it’s more like 6.

See? I’m not perfect. But I did it anyway, and it didn’t turn out too bad. If I can do it, so can you! So get out there with your stuff. Okay? Please?

The 3 Big Excuses Online Entrepreneurs (Myself Included) Use to Not Get Their Stuff Out There

Goodness, do I ever know there are lots of super legitimate excuses not to put yourself out there. Do any of thse ring a bell?

  • I got busy today. I’ll do it tomorrow.
  • I’m not prepared enough.
  • I didn’t shower today.
  • I don’t want to make a fool of myself.

Yep. Here’s the thing, though: If you don’t put yourself out there, you’ll never make any money.

If you don’t get the word out about what you do, how are your prospective clients going to find you?

Oh sure, it’s easy to hide behind our computers. I love doing it. I am a hardcore introvert and there’s nothing I like better than clacking away at my keyboard, feeling all productive while I avoid sending that email out for a speaking opportunity or a follow-up with a prospect who said “maybe.”

So, online entrepreneurs, how do you get past the blocks that are preventing you from getting out there? In the video, I cover a few cool tips that I love. Here’s what they are.

How to Get Out There With Your Stuff, Even If You Think You’re Not Ready

First, block out sacred time in your schedule. Give yourself three 1-hour chunks of time and spread them throughout your week. Use that as “getting out there” time. Follow up with prospects. Blog. Work on your Facebook Ads. Look for speaking gigs.

Don’t tinker with your courses, fiddle with your website, or get distracted on social media. Use those 3 hours to get. your. ass. out. there.

Second, create a personal vision statement. I have created a template for you (my gift to you) on one of my favorite ways to do it. Print out your gift, fill in the 2 easy-peasy blanks, and hang it up in your workspace. Get ready to be surprised by how it encourages you to be brave and take those scary getting-out-there steps, even when  you’re feeling discouraged.

Third, remember this: people prefer human beings. Full disclosure: I did not shower before making today’s video. That’s okay. I’m not perfect. You don’t have to be perfect. People will love you for your screw-ups, your honesty, your flaws. They are what make you unique. Don’t try to gloss over your personality. I promise the best success you will ever achieve will happen when you are being exactly who you are.
